Four Realms

According to Swami Krishnananda, in his commentary on the Mandukya Upanishad, there are four “quarters” of the OM (AUM) chant. The first “quarter” is the AH sound and this corresponds to and honors the waking state of consciousness. The second “quarter” is the UU sound and this corresponds to and honors the dreaming state of consciousness which we experience at night. The third “quarter” is the MM sound and this corresponds to and honors the deep sleep state of consciousness where there are no thoughts. Finally, the fourth “quarter” is the “sound of silence” and this corresponds to and honors the Absolute Itself. So, overall, the OM (AUM) chant is a journey through three transitory states of consciousness that culminate in the permanent state of Absolute consciousness which is beyond description. So, OM (AUM) is like a boat that takes us from the deep ocean (waking state) to the bay (dream state) to the shore (deep sleep) and finally to dry-land (the Absolute). OM (AUM) meditation is a journey inward. Just as Jesus said “The Kingdom of Heaven is within oneself.” I agree. Namaste, Keith

  1. Nice article. Thanks for using my OM art. I probably should have put my name in the lower right, but that’s OK. If I provide them to someone other than a friend, I’ll likely do that.
